Winter Field Day 2025 (WFD2025) is on Saturday, January 25th and Sunday, January 26th, 2025…less than a week away. Though we have discussed WFD2025 in several club meetings and decided to conduct it at our classroom at the Harrison Community Center, finalization of the venue was delayed until classroom improvements (heating) could be confirmed and finished. We have been making continuous improvements to our classroom environment including donations of two, big-screen TVs, a portable PA system, podium, a radio desk, electrical work, a custom-built cable pass-through, various cables & connectors & more.
We are pleased to announce that a portable heat pump has been donated to the club and our friends at Hamilton County Parks & Recreation have completed repairs on the building’s boiler-based heating system. Wearing sunglasses or squinting isn’t “cool” in our classroom, so we are also working on window baffles and café curtains to better control the abundance of light that enters the classroom through the six large windows. So now we have a cozy, warm environment for cold weather activities and cooling for those lazy, hazy days of Summer.
This year, in view of our increasing educational outreach, we’re going to do WFD a little different with an eye on learning how to do it then once we’re ready to flip the switches, we’ll start operating for the duration of this year’s WFD. As you may have noticed, over the past few years, there has been an increasing interest in mobile and outdoor operations, Parks On The Air (POTA), on-site special event stations, mountain-topping (operate from mountaintops, roadside parks, picnic areas, etc.), operating from the beach and similar places is another fun way to enjoy our hobby AND in so doing, learn how to do it in places that are much different from the comforts of our ham shack at home. All of this combines to give us a wide-ranging set of skills to use when our community needs help and have fun when we want to just play.
We plan to set up two HF radios and vertical antennas. You are welcome to use them or bring your own to try them out.
On-Site Food.
Participants should bring shareable food. As this is a classroom environment, we will not be cooking on-site. There are several restaurants and eateries nearby for those that wish to enjoy them.
