VE Exams for FCC License.
Jack Thompson, N5UOV, is the Volunteer Examiners Team Leader for the Chattanooga Amateur Radio Club. If you have additional questions about the testing process, please contact Jack at testing@w4am.net or via phone at 901-828-8266.
Those wishing to test for any class of license or to upgrade must register for a test session by clicking the button at the bottom of this page.
After clicking on the button, a list of all testing sessions offered by the Chattanooga Amateur Radio Club will be displayed. If you have not previously registered at HamStudy.org, you will need to do so before you can select a specific session. If you have already registered at HamStudy.org, just log in and follow on-line instructions.
You will be presented with a list of test sessions. Several green oval-shaped buttons will be displayed representing different times, as well as identifying how many are already registered for a session. Select the desired session by clicking the green, oval button appropriate for your choice.
When you have completed the registration/session selection process, our VE Testing Team will be notified automatically.
Please note that you MUST have a FRN from the FCC before signing up.
If there are no pre-registered license applicants, a testing session will not be conducted. If you do not pre-register, you run the risk of there not being a testing session at all.
Anyone wishing to take a test must register/signup for a session by the Thursday prior to the requested test date so that a full VE Team can be assembled for your test. Three (3) VEs are required for any license testing.
- Remember that Chattanooga is in the Eastern Time Zone.
- Testing fee: $15 (cash or check is highly preferred but if unavoidable, we may be able to accept use of a debit/credit card). Ask about credit card payment options BEFORE the test session.
- Multiple Tests.
If you pass a test, you may take the test for the next level without additional charge; however, you must do so within the same test session. For example, if you pass the Technician test, you may take the General without paying an additional fee. If you pass the General, you may take the Extra without paying an additional fee provided that all are done within the same test session. If you plan to attempt multiple tests, please be aware that while there is no specific time limit for taking a test, the testing room is normally only available until approximately 9 PM. This allows for almost three hours to do testing. Please make sure you arrive well before the scheduled session start time, prepare, & study for testing in such a way as to complete the test(s) in the available time as well as be mindful of the time constraint during the test session(s). We do not have the ability to relocate the test session(s) if you are not finished within the time that the testing room is available. - Picture ID or two other ID’s such as library card, voter registration, etc.
- For a license upgrade: Bring your original license and a copy. The VE Team will keep the copy and return the original to you.
- Bring Any CSCE along with a copy that you want to be considered. The VE Team will keep the copy and return the original. There will not be a copier available so please bring your own copies.
Note: Calculators that have been initialized, i.e., reset to their “off the shelf as if brand new” condition, i.e., may be used if desired. No formulas or stored amateur radio-related information shall exist in calculators, mobile, or electronic devices or be used during testing.
